The Masala
Bhangra Workout® is derived from two Indian words:
• Masala, which
means ‘spicy’ in Hindi, and
• Bhangra,
which is a traditional folk dance from the northern state of
Punjab, India
The Masala
Bhangra Workout® is an exercise dance routine that modernizes
the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra by blending traditional
Bhangra dance steps and the exhilaration of Bollywood (Hindi
film) moves, seen recently in the Oscar-winning film Slumdog
Millionaire! This unique dance mixes cardiovascular with fun,
and is suitable for participants of all ages and fitness levels.
It is a certified fitness program backed up by the fitness
boards, and devised by Sarina Jain, the "Jane Fonda of India."
This program is
designed for people of all ages and fitness levels who love to
stay physically active through dance and want to learn about
Indian culture. The Masala Bhangra Workout is certified by
American Fitness Boards, including the Aerobics and Fitness
Association of America (AFAA). Specifically, it introduces high
energy Bhangra and Bollywood dance movements in an
easy-to-follow fitness format, and is a mechanism by which
thousands of people have lost weight and become physically
active. With the dance choreography directly influenced by the
music and dance of modern Bhangra and Bollywood styles, The
Masala Bhangra Workout® is a fresh and exciting addition to the
world of fitness and dance.
Sarina
Jain,
America’s first cross-cultural fitness star is the creator
of the Masala Bhangra Workout®. She is an energetic fitness
innovator, music-video choreographer and international
television/radio personality. She hosts her own TV segment on
Discovery Channel’s Fit TV and has a show on Exercise TV.tv.
Her regular appearances on NBC’s “Today,” and other major media
have catapulted her to fame across mainstream America, and
solidified her place as “Indian Jane Fonda” of America.
With over 18 years in the fitness industry, she has released 6
DVD volumes of The Masala Bhangra Workout.
Dorie & Mark
Wexler, owners of Springs Salsa and Dance Fitness were amongst
the first certified MBW instructors in the US. In 2007
they brought The Masala Bhangra Workout to Colorado in the hopes
that everyone would feel the spirit of this workout and get pure
results!
In 2009, Sarina
Jain visited Springs Salsa and Dance Fitness and our students
had the opportunity to take a LIVE class and spend the weekend
learning authentic Bollywood and Bhangra movement.
